T.O.R.C. Races at Waterford
see you there in 2008! June 21 & 22
the following is a report on the T.O.R.C. Waterford races from the A.P.B.A. monthly "Propeller" magazine

Thunder on the Nanticoke returned to Waterford, Ontario, Canada for the weekend of June 23rd. As we approach the 10th anniversary of this event, the competition seems to get more intense each year. The 3/4 mile tri-oval proves to be very challenging. It is a driver’s course, and flat-out top end speed may not get you to the podium.

Hosted by the Toronto Outboard Racing Club, the action on Saturday included racers of all ages starting with the Push Boat competition. Mike Werner Jr. proved that his 2006 victory was no fluke as he defended his crown with a record push of 41 feet. Second place went to Ryan Brewster, who also received the best in show award, and third place went to Josh Van Velkenburg. Werner also demonstrated his mastery of racing within the cockpit, as he won JH both days.

Rookie driver Tom Heighington, who took his first ride in a hydroplane at last year’s Waterford test session, won FAH and came in 2nd in ASH. Other drivers with double wins for the weekend were: Braydon Halsey (AXSH), Brian Rossman (25SSH), Scott Knox (CSH) and Hunter Grimes III (FEH). Results are below.

The event was also the second stop of the Meals on Wheels Charity Race Series. In its third year, the Series, sponsored by Bathfitter.com, consists of 11 days of racing in Ontario, Canada and Redwood, New York. It is unique in that it pits all ages, classes and divisions against one another to determine the best overall racer. The point system takes into account not only your position on the race course, but how many boats were in your class. Fifty percent of the funds raised are donated to the various Meals on Wheels offices in the areas where races are held, with the balance being distributed to the registered drivers. This year’s first prize will be $500.00 and a personally engraved Bulova watch donated by Van Valkenburgs.ca. Over 30 drivers are registered for the Series. The top 10 after five races are: Scott Knox, CSH; Bill Keegan, 25SSH; Andrew Fralick, ASH; John Greer, DCH; Rob Keegan, DMH; Steve Noury, DSH; Hunter Grimes IV, FEH; John Greer, CMH; Drew Frankland, ASH and Rob Keegan, DSH.
