Proctor Marine April Newsletter - Open House
April 2010
We don’t plan on mailing newsletters in the future. We hope to send an electronic version about once a month. We promise to keep them light and informative. Help us spread the word by telling all of your boating friends to log on to www.proctormarine.com and follow the links to sign up for future e-mail newsletters. Feel free to forward this one to get them started.
Our 23rd. annual spring Open House is just around the corner! We hope to see you all on April 10th for this highly anticipated spring event.
Once again our service department will be converted into an Accessory Fair for the day. Many of our key suppliers will be on hand offering special products and prices that will be available on this day only. Larry Mellors will present seminars in the boat showroom. At 10:30 sit in for
”New Soft Plastics – What They Mean to Today’s Angler”
. Stop back again at 12:30 for
”Knot Tying 101”
. Charlie Wray, host of the
Fishful Thinking TV Show
will also be on hand showcasing his new Verado powered Crestliner 2150 SportFish. Charlie is eager to talk fishing. Whether you are a seasoned expert or a novice fisherman just learning the sport, be sure to spend a few minutes visiting with Charlie. You will be glad that you did.
There’s a lot to see and do at our annual Open House, but the boats are always the stars! See an excellent selection of Chaparral, Crestliner and Key West powerboats on display and sale priced.
Enter your name and e-mail address for a chance to win one of several great door prizes. Chat with factory representatives on hand. Take time out for a coffee and a donut or enjoy a hotdog and help us raise some money for a great charity.
Volunteers from the Port Dover Power & Sail Squadron will be on hand to offer the Pleasure Craft Operator Card Challenge Test. All operators of any power driven pleasure craft are required to carry proof of competency. If you haven’t got your card yet you are late! Don’t put this off any longer. Please prepare today to challenge the test on April 10th.
Our first truckload of 2010 Key West sport fishing boats have arrived. Check out the 152 CC and the 1720 CC, two popular small, center console models. What fun little boats! Just right for running across the bay, or heading to the marina for bait or groceries, either model makes a great cottage skiff. And with an E-Tec on the back you know that they are light, quick and reliable. Because of their self-bailing design, you can leave these compact gems tied to the dock all week long in a rain storm with no worries of faulty bilge pumps or dead batteries. The all fiberglass hull has a 10 year warranty and with removable seat cushions there is little need to tarp them in at night.
Powered by Evinrude E-Tecs, these boats are just plain fun to drive! And they are easy to own too - a strong Canadian dollar has helped to drive prices down. Take a look and see how far your dollar can go.
For a limited time Crestliner is giving away a
Free Custom Travel Cover
or offering
a generous cash discount
on almost every Mercury powered boat package that they offer.
Act fast because this great offer ends on April 15th. Drop in to check out our selection of Crestliner boats and pontoons and to learn more about the Crestliner spring promotion.
Antifouling Painting
Most boat owners spend considerable time looking for the latest chart plotter, the best fishing tackle, and all the latest tricks to catch more fish. This year, more than ever, many owners and captains are also looking for ways to get the most out of every gallon of fuel. Aside from making sure your motors are perfectly tuned, using fuel monitoring devices, and keeping your propeller(s) clean, there is one area often overlooked when trying to get the most out of each gallon…….the boat bottom.
Spending the time to choose, prep, and apply the right bottom paint can have a major impact on boating enjoyment. If the bottom is not treated, heavy growth of fouling organisms can reduce the responsiveness as well as make the boat sit lower in the water. Prolonged growth can actually damage the bottom of the hull. Fouling also causes drag, slowing you down and increases fuel costs.
Types of paint
There are two different types of paint- hard bottom paint and those that disappear over time, known as ablative paint. The hard bottom paint dries to a porous film that is packed with biocides, which leach out on contact with water to prevent fouling growth. Once the biocide is exhausted, the hard paint film remains on the boat. Hard paints lose their antifouling ability once out of the water and cannot be hauled and relaunched without painting. The main benefit of hard antifouling paints is their predictable antifouling performance in the water. They provide a hard scrubbable and abrasion resistant finish.
Ablative paint film polishes away like a bar of soap at a controlled rate, reducing paint build-up and eliminating the need for sanding. The biocides are chemically bound to the paint, and are only active when in the water. This allows the boats to be hauled and relaunched without painting. It provides multi-season protection even after winter storage. The longevity of these coatings is related to the thickness of the paint.
Surface preparation and application techniques
Boats that have had yearly applications of anti fouling paint will need to be sanded before a recoating can occur. Power washing will remove the surface contaminants, and paint will adhere well to surfaces prepared this way, but will not get rid of underlying old porous coating and the roughness of the surface will remain. Sanding the bottom with a good 60-80-grit paper will remove all unwanted paint and you are ready to go. The amount of paint that you will require can be calculated as follows:
Boat length overall x Beam x .085 = # square feet.
For example- 30’ x 10’ x .85 = 255 sq. feet
Dividing this by the sq ft. coverage found on the can itself. This is how many gallons that will be needed for one coat. The recommendation is that 2 coats be used.
Application works best using a 3/8” inch solvent resistant roller, and the “tip off” with a paint brush to remove the roller stipple. This method will result in a nice smooth finish.
For those folks who are not quite that handy with a paint brush, or have the luxury of the time, our service department will gladly do your painting for you. Call or drop in to discuss your anti-fouling paint options today!
Take Advantage of Trade Shows and Open Houses
This is the time of the year to attend trade shows and open houses to expand your knowledge allowing you to become a better angler and boater. If I can glean one new piece of information from these events, I am more than satisfied. Not only this, but if you are only a boating angler, it beats sitting around the house. It is an opportunity to talk fishing and boating with other like-minded individuals.
At the time of this newsletter, a lot of the trade shows have ended, but some are still to happen. As winter has turned into spring now, there are certainly open houses at business establishments, whether marine or angling. Make sure to attend these functions. It is also a chance to buy new equipment and possibly take advantage of special pricing.
Open houses provide a time to meet and talk to industry people. These are certainly individuals who can address your technical questions.
Many of these open houses include seminars presented either by industry personnel or field/pro staff, offering a great opportunity to discuss techniques and new products.
Don’t forget to attend Proctor Marine’s Open House on Saturday, April 10, 2010. You may just walk away with a great purchase, a new fishing/boating tip, or better yet, both.
